Medicine tailored to each patient
MC Aesculap Special Hospital for Surgery promotes and advances an individualized approach to each patient and their disease as one of the fundamental principles of its work.
An individualized approach to the patient and their disease has become a major trend in modern medicine in recent years, although it is still taking time to become fully embraced by physicians and, even more so, understood by patients themselves.
What does an “individualized approach to the patient and their disease” actually mean?
It means that modern medicine recognizes that diseases are not necessarily identical even when they share the same name, and that the treatment of the same disease therefore does not have to be identical for two different people.
Powerful modern genetic analysis techniques can identify hundreds of variations in different oncogenes, showing us that no two breast cancers are in fact exactly alike.
The same applies to many other diseases and disorders (including cancers of the uterus or ovaries, thyroid disorders, melanoma and aesthetic conditions), but it also applies to patients themselves.
The MC Aesculap medical team respects this individuality, among other things by insisting on immunohistochemical and genetic analyses of surgically removed tumour tissue, allowing treatment to be tailored to each individual patient in the most appropriate way.

From detecting a breast lesion to treatment
The vast majority of breast lesions can be assessed more precisely through a clinical examination by an experienced specialist, high-quality mammography and high-quality ultrasound.
Magnetic resonance imaging is a useful diagnostic tool in breast disease, provided that it is used appropriately. A definitive diagnosis is obtained only after the tissue from the lesion has been examined under a microscope.
No form of breast cancer treatment can begin without a histological diagnosis.
We believe that, for a patient with a breast lesion suspicious for cancer, it is preferable to begin treatment with surgery without a core biopsy.
In this case, the histological diagnosis is established during surgery using the so-called “ex tempore” biopsy. The tumour is removed in its entirety and sent for histological examination, which takes approximately twenty minutes. Once the result is obtained, the definitive surgical procedure is performed.
This avoids damage to the tumour tissue and the need to wait several days for the histological result.
A treatment that is appropriate for one patient may be a poor therapeutic choice for another.
When treatment is carefully tailored to the stage of the disease, its biological characteristics and the individual characteristics of the patient, considerably better treatment outcomes can be achieved.
The success of MC Aesculap, particularly in the surgery of malignant tumours, is largely based on respecting this principle.
The prognosis of breast cancer and the ultimate outcome of the disease depend on two major parameters:
- the stage of the disease
- the biological characteristics of the tumour
Treatment may include hormonal therapy, cytostatic therapy, chemotherapy and surgical intervention.
